Nicea Degering is a homegrown Utah girl with a love for family, broadcasting, and her alma mater, BYU.

You were introduced to her in 1996 when she joined the ABC 4 News team as their crime reporter.

Since then, she's covered Salt Lake's tornado, the 2002 Winter Olympics and the Elizabeth Smart story.

Today, Nicea is a co-host of Good Things Utah.

Nicea, her husband Scott, and two daughters reside in Sandy.

I have been involved in dentistry alongside my husband, Terry, for 34 years. Just before our marriage 36 years ago, I graduated with a bachelor of science degree in computer programming and was employed as a programmer/systems analyst for years. Many of your spouses also have their own careers, but it is still possible to be an active Alliance member serving the dental profession and the community.

My involvement in the Alliance of the American Dental Association began in Terry’s second year of dental school and has continued ever since because whether we like it or not, dentistry is a family business. What happens in the practice affects the family. Over that time, I have learned to recognize that the dental profession is a series of decisions. First, there was the decision of where to attend dental school, how many schools to apply to, and then three to four years later, the big decision of applying for residencies, practicing dentistry with the questions of where to hang a shingle, and whether to buy a practice or become an associate. I thought that once we had made all those decisions, we would be sailing, but the decisions continue even to this day. It was dentistry that took us from a successful practice in Utah to beginning a new practice in Anchorage, Alaska.

The first time I had to collect money from a patient in the office, I was terrified. The first time I made a collection call, I cried when it was over. The first time I took a patient to court, I thought I would have a heart attack. But I had friends in dentistry that I could rely on to provide me with collection ideas and suggestions.

Throughout this time, I have been active in the Alliance of the American Dental Association on the local, state and national levels. I began serving on a local dental health education committee, creating games and kits for the dentists and spouses to use for dental health presentations. Dentists and spouses taught these presentations for many years.

Marketing the practice became a way of life for us both in Utah and in Anchorage. Because I served as the AADA public relations chair, I have been able to create and send press releases to the media as part of our practice marketing campaign.

Some of you will know that obtaining financial loans for practice growth is considerably more difficult than it has been in better economic times. Financial institutions now require business plans with mission and vision statements. Earlier this year, I coordinated the preparation of the AADA business plan. How grateful Terry and I are that because of this, we provided this necessary information to obtain practice financing in the last few weeks.

I have provided you with just a snippet of the skills I have learned from being a member of the Alliance. Kyla Rollins, a female student spouse in Cleveland, Ohio, said: “Attending my first Alliance of the ADA conference in 2011 in Richmond, Va., was a great experience. I gained insight into helping my spouse start a dental practice and a whole new appreciation for the Alliance.” Kyla saw how much hard work the Alliance members put forth in all areas: legislative, education, membership and well-being. She came away from the conference with new friends and mentors and an excitement to continue being involved in the future. In addition, Kyla presented a blogging tutorial to teach all conference attendees. The best part about the Alliance is learning from each other.

Korey Anderson, a male student spouse in Augusta, Ga., attended the Alliance conference in Tempe, Ariz. He learned how to help his wife set up their dental practice, traits to look for when hiring staff and how to monitor the productivity of the practice. He remarked that if he had known how much information he would receive, he would have brought an entire busload of male spouses with him. Korey became the president of the Alliance of the Medical College of Georgia and has been involved in several projects that have been nominated for the AADA member projects awards.

By now, you are probably asking yourself if your spouse and your practice would benefit from Alliance membership.

The answer is a resounding YES!

Members of the Alliance have been in your shoes. Whether you opened the doors to your practice last month, last year or many years ago, we have been there and are great mentors. We love to help each other and when you make friends across the country you have a wealth of information at your disposal. There are many levels of Alliance involvement. Please help your spouse to set aside time every few years to service in Alliance leadership positions and to pay dues every year.

Dentists, significant others and staff members can also join the Alliance as contributing members. National annual dues are only $50. Some states and some local groups have additional dues, but it will be the best and least expensive investment you will ever make. You may access our application for membership on the AADA website at allianceada.org.

It is time for fun, friendship and philanthropy—the Alliance of the ADA. Join today; you will not regret this decision. It is an investment in your practice, your spouse, your marriage, your family and your community.

Alliance to collect care kits at annual convention

Las Vegas—Annual Session-goers can make a difference in the lives of developmentally challenged individuals or families in crisis by donating to an Alliance of the ADA service project.

With the theme, “We Care for You from Head to Toe,” the AADA project gives everyone attending the ADA Annual Session Oct. 10-13 a chance to donate care kits that contain a new hat, a pair of socks and a toothbrush for clients of two not-for-profit organizations that serve Las Vegas citizens in need: Opportunity Village, an organization that serves people with intellectual disabilities, and The Shade Tree, a shelter for women, children and their pets. Dentists, dental assistants, dental hygienists, dental laboratory technicians, students, family and friends attending the ADA meeting can participate in the effort.

Donors are asked to fill a zip-top bag with a hat, a pair of socks and a toothbrush and bring it to the MGM Grand hotel. Alliance members will be there to receive kits Monday, Oct. 10, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. and Tuesday, Oct. 11, 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

“Alliance members will be at the MGM Grand near the pool lobby and walkway. They will be wearing bright yellow aprons and will be ready to receive your contributions with a grand smile,” said Johanna Manasse, member of the Alliance Membership Council.

Donors can also choose to make a contribution of $10 or more to support the project.

The Provo District Dental Alliance is on the road again! Every year during February {dental health month} the Provo district dental alliance travels to schools from Santaquin to Saratoga Springs up to Alpine delighting children with one of two puppet shows. This year Rocky's Smile will delight the children.

Today Rocky, Dudley, Daisy and the other puppets made their debut at the Your Healthy Smile event at UVU.

Great job, ladies! Keep up the good work teaching youngsters about the importance of a healthy smile.

The AUDA Convention was held February 19 at the Salt Palace and Marriott Hotel in conjunction with the UDA Convention. Melanie Roundy did a wonderful job at organizing this event. There was a great class held that morning entitled "The Power of Effective Communication" by Gary and Joy Lundberg. We had a delicious luncheon at the Marriott Hotel. The service project was for the Christmas Box House. Items were collected for the Christmas Box House and fleece blankets were made. Author Richard Paul Evans was the guest speaker. Jane Binns, the District 9 Trustee, was our national visitor and installed next year's board. We also had a great table about the Alliance by the exhibit hall. Many many purses were donated to Women Helping Women. Those who donated were given a delicious cookie. We found out that people didn't know who we were. We were thought to be just a service organization and not the spouses of dentists.

Richard Paul Evans gave a wonderful talk. He spoke of things he wished he had known when he was in high school and they still apply to us. Mr. Evans said that there were 5 things that he had wished he known they were:

1) There is a reason you are here - you are divine and you have a destiny. Finding out the reason you are here is part of that destiny. Listen to that voice that is within you.

2) To achieve that goal/destiny you have to let go of any chains that bind you: You do that with forgiveness. Ask yourself who you need to forgive. Don't forget to forgive yourself.

3) Now do something. Take chances. Start living your life. Don't worry about a failure; that's part of life. If you don't ask, the answer will always be "no". Don't let fear stop you from taking chances.

4) Now that you're taking chances, you will have adversity. We succeed because of our trials. Mr. Evans told us of how he found out at age 40 that he had Tourette's syndrome and how that has affected his life and the things he does to overcome and live with that challenge.

5) Learn to love. We love those whom we serve.

Give Kids a Smile, Salt Lake District

On February 20, 2010, Alliance members of the Salt Lake District joined the Salt Lake District Dental Society, Dentrix Dental Systems, Sullivan-Schein Dental, and the Salt Lake Community College to host “Give Kids a Smile” Day, a nationwide ADA program. Over 80 grade school children in the Salt Lake Valley received dental work donated by volunteer dentists and other oral hygiene caregivers. Alliance members provided dental related educational opportunities for many children as well as caregivers while they waited for dental care.

The Alliance sponsored displays showing children how to take good care of their teeth and brush and floss them properly. Puppets and oversize sets of teeth with large toothbrushes allowed children to learn and practice proper techniques. A test tube display showing the amount of sugar contained in various foods was very popular. Oral hygiene videos were enjoyed by children and their parents along with a variety of coloring pages, word puzzles and other educational materials.

Alliance members had previously assembled oral hygiene kits to pass out to the children when their visit to the dentist was completed. The Alliance of the Utah Dental Association also provided 10 dozen cookies for event volunteers. It was a very successful event and GKAS organizers expressed great appreciation for Alliance efforts and support. We are looking forward to helping again next year!

The Provo District is in full swing with it's annual puppet show performed throughout Utah County. Each day is packed with as many as 4 performances in elementary schools throughout the valley.

Helping the Dental Practice Thrive in Today’s Economy

Many practitioners have noticed changes in their practice scheduling and procedures performed. In order to keep the business viable, there are several tips that can help.

1. Strengthen your skills and knowledge. Get back to reading the industry publications, attending CE, and improving and expanding your skill set.

2. Get back into a routine. New patients go where they can get an appointment. You might need to decrease days off and vacations in order to improve access to your services. Re-evaluate your schedule to insure that you are allowing access to many demographics of patients.

3. Decide how to handle questions about your office and the economic effects it is dealing with. You don’t want to talk about a poor economy throughout the appointment and then show the patient a treatment plan for thousands of dollars. Be proactive in your actions and dialogue in demonstrating that now is the time to make yourself better, to differentiate yourself.

4. Start rebuilding your patient network. Internal referrals remain the most consistent and long-term way to build a solid practice. It also remains a sound economic investment. As you see your patients in the community, visit with them, introduce yourself to their friends, and invite them to come to your office.

5. Don’t make the same mistakes twice. The state of the economy might not have been your fault, but your actions have contributed to the level of stress and slowdown that you might be experiencing. Assess your behavior with regards to communication, treatment plan acceptance, staff competence, and staff goals; make changes to positively

We would like to thank all those that were instrumental in organizing and arranging the humanitarian project that the Alliance participated in at the Dental Alliance luncheon held during the Utah Dental Convention.

We have had the opportunity to partner with the American Medical Association Alliance and fight the use of smoking in PG rated movies. Below is the article giving some details of the campaign.

“The problem of tobacco in Hollywood has an answer: demand future youth-rated films be tobacco-free and break the ties between the entertainment and tobacco industries. The American Medical Association (AMA) Alliance has always been a strong, passionate advocate for the health of America's children and feels it is imperative to join national health groups and advocate for youth-rated films to be free of tobacco and its associated images.”

“To raise awareness about the harm on-screen tobacco use causes and garner support for the Smoke Free Movies campaign, the New York State Department of Health and the University of California at San Francisco developed the national action program: Screen Out!”

Goals of Screen Out!

In October 2006, the Medical Alliance joined the Smoke Free Movies movement giving a powerful, national voice to the Screen Out Campaign. Through letter writing, petition and endorsement campaigns, the members of the AMA Alliance are creating national public awareness and building a strong base of support for the four solutions set forth by the campaign.

AADA Conference 2009- Find the Shoe that Fits

The AADA Leadership Conference, which is now titled AADA Conference, was held in Baltimore the last weekend in March (26-28). Perhaps “Leadership” was dropped from the title to encourage participation from any member of the Alliance who wants to attend and become fully involved whether holding a leadership position or not. The theme of
the Conference was “Find the Shoe that Fits,” encouraging us to volunteer in our particular area of interest to further promote AADA. An optional tour to Washington DC was offered on Wednesday and a busload of participants took advantage of a great historical opportunity and beautiful spring weather. Thursday included an optional tour of the historic city of Baltimore. Even though the day was drizzly, we enjoyed many sites including the Inner Harbor, Shakespeare Street, and Fort McHenry, home of the “Star Spangled Banner”. A welcome event kicked off the Conference Thursday evening, which then continued jam-packed with a legislative breakfast, membership luncheons, and dental health meetings until late Saturday night concluding with the Gala. The Well Being session speaker was Sheryl Roush whose “Sparkle-Tude” presentation displayed how our attitudes really do make a difference in our lives and showed us that laughter is imperative to our well being. Two recipients from Utah, Sue Ryser and Marisa Wall, were honored as Beulah K. Spencer winners at the Spencer luncheon on Saturday. Baltimore is home to the National Museum of Dentistry housing George Washington’s choppers (they’re not made of wood after all!) along with several interactive exhibits. The two ladies from Georgia, Shari Carter and Mary Percy, who were the Conference co-chairs for gifts and favors, did an outstanding job. Each event, luncheon, and dinner was beautifully decorated and each attendee came home with a bag full of wonderful gifts and memories. The "Georgia girls" will also be the Conference co-chairs for 2010, and they promised to outdo this one – put AADA Conference 2010 (late April) in your plans.

Alliance Day was a great success. Our booth at convention received a great deal of attention from prospective members. The service project was quickly completed. Our new board was installed by our National President Anne Morrison. Thank you to Sharon Wiest who has done an outstanding job as President and congratulations to Margaret Tribe and our new board.

Just a few dates for you to keep in mind: February 20th is our annual Utah Alliance day luncheon. Reservations can be made through Sharon Wiest or Margaret Tribe. March 25th-28th is our national Leadership Conference in Baltimore Maryland. Information about this can be found at allianceada.org. The most recent "Key" edition can also be accessed at the same website. The ADA Convention will be held in Honolulu, HI this year on Oct. 1-5.

Please watch for the information on changes to our AUDA constitution. We will be voting on the changes at our state alliance luncheon on February 20th. Hope you are all planning on attending the luncheon which is held during the UDA Convention. We will have the installation of next years AUDA board at this time. At our last AUDA Board meeting we decided to set up a blog to possibly replace our website. So here goes. I thought I would post some pictures of the ADA meeting in San Antonio and some pictures from the Conference that was held at the same time for the Alliance. The weather was great down there and we all enjoyed the River Walk very much. Our hotel was right on the River Walk and we just came out the back of the hotel and were right there. Many of us took advantage of the boat ride along the river. The distinguished speakers were outstanding. Friday morning we heard Tom Brocaw and Saturday it was Bob Woodward and his wife (the journalist severely injured in Iraq). They held a rodeo and dinner one evening that was very fun too. The Alliance was not to be out done. Our own Janette Sonnenberg was the outgoing AADA President. She and Brent hosted a wonderful reception in their suite in the hotel. Janette has done an outstanding job as President and has been a great represenitive of our state. We can all be proud of her. Our new President is Anne Morrison of Nebraska and she was installed just after the House of Delegates session. The Nebraska Alliance put on a reception for Anne and later that evening was the Presidents Gala where we honored both Anne and Janette.
